COLUMBIA, MO (July 3, 2011) - For Immediate Release:
Lightning Damages Northeast Columbia Home
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 3:59 pm on Sunday, July 3, 2011, to 5419 Clark Lane for a reported residential structure fire.
The fire at this location was reported to Boone County Fire Protection District (BCFPD) Station 1 by a citizen who had passed by the residence and then stopped by the station. The fire was then reported to PSJC and Units from the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched as well. When BCFPD crews arrived on the scene they reported a working structure fire; the fire had vented through the roof and involved a section of the exterior wall on the second story. The fire was brought under control quickly and crews then crews concentrated on searching for hidden fire along with the origin and cause of the fire.
The home is owned by Jim Cook of Columbia who was not at the residence at the time of the fire. At the time of this release BCFPD Fire Investigator Gerry Noland reported the cause of the fire was a lightning strike and the preliminary damage estimate was set at $25,000.00. During this response there were 6 BCFPD Firefighters and 16 CFD firefighters on the scene and there were no injuries reported as a result of this fire.
The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
