Afternoon Fire Damages Columbia Home

COLUMBIA, MO (July 5, 2011) - Columbia Fire Fighters responded to a report of a house fire at 314 Hillsdale at 2:26 PM on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. While enroute, 9-1-1 advised responding units that the fire was in bedroom closet and that the house was being evacuated.

Fire fighters arrived at 2:23 to find smoke coming from the home, located smouldering clothing in a closet in one of the bedrooms and extinguished the fire in less then 5 minutes.

Fire damage was contained to the closet and one bedroom of the home. The home owner, David Moss, was at home with three of his children ages 11, 11, and 7 when the fire occurred. None of the occupants were injured and no fire fighters were injured.

Fire investigators confirmed that the origin of the fire was in the closet of the bedroom. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. There was a report that children in the home were using fireworks, however fire investigators were unable to locate any evidence of fire works in the origin area of the fire. Damage to the house and contents is estimated at $2,500.00. The family is able to continue to live in the home.

Smoke alarms were present and operational in home, however the fire was discovered shortly before the smoke alarms sounded.
