Early Evening Attic Fire Damages Central Columbia Home

COLUMBIA, MO (July 10, 2011) - Columbia Fire Fighters were dispatched to 708 Ridgeway Ave at 6:51 PM on Sunday, July 10, 2011 for a report of a fire and smoke coming from attic vents.The caller, Tammy Coats, was an occupant of the home she shares with her husband and son.

Upon arrival, fire fighters noted that everyone appeared to be out of the home and light smoke was coming from the attic vents on the eaves of the home. Fire fighters made access to the attic and found a small smouldering fire in the area of the attic where commercial power enters the home. Fire fighters quickly extinguished the smoldering fire and removed attic insulation to ensure the fire and any smouldering insulation was extinguished.

There were no injuries to the occupants. Fire fighters in full gear battled high temperatures and humidity levels and while no fire fighters on the scene required medical attention, fire crews were rotated in and out frequently and provided water and other fluids.

Fire investigators know the fire began in the attic and preliminary causes point to an unknown electrical issue. Damage is estimated at less then $2500.00. The home is owned by Newton and Joyce Riley. The Coats family will be staying with local family members until they can return to the home.
