City Government Center receives LEED Gold Certification
COLUMBIA, MO (July 11, 2011) - When the city of Columbia began planning the City Hall expansion and renovation of the Daniel Boone Building, one of the primary goals for architect Chiodini Associates and engineer William Tao & Associates was for the project to attain Leadership in Energy and Environmental (LEED) Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. On June 30, the city received word that the City Government Center achieved LEED Gold, instead. With 44 credits attempted and 44 credits accepted by LEED, the project was well in the Gold range of 39-51 credits.
Sustainability Manager Barbara Buffaloe noted that as the project progressed, the design team and city staff realized there was an opportunity to achieve LEED Gold. "The architects, engineers and entire Public Works staff, from the director to the custodial staff, should be acknowledged for their dedication to achieving LEED Gold," said Buffaloe.
The LEED rating system is a way to demonstrate immediate, measurable impact on key concerns like energy conservation, global climate change and occupant health, explained Assistant City Manager Tony St. Romaine. The City Government Center uses 27 percent less energy and 43 percent less water than a typical commercial building.
Many of the building materials contain recycled content or rapidly renewable resources. Indoor environmental quality controls include the use of no- or low-volatile organic compounds (VOCs) products, state-of-the art ventilation and eco-friendly housekeeping practices.
"The city of Columbia wants to be good stewards of resources, both natural and financial, and is living up to its expectations of being a model for other commercial development. We promised to create a downtown City Hall that was sustainable, accessible, environment and pedestrian friendly, and I am proud that we surpassed our goal for LEED certification," St. Romaine said.
The final LEED review results are posted on the city's website, www.GoColumbiaMo.com. For more information, please contact Assistant City Manager Tony St. Romaine at (573) 874-7214 or Sustainability Manager Barbara Buffaloe at (573) 817-5025.
