Caution urged at COLT railroad crossings
COLUMBIA, MO (July 14, 2011) - With the Columbia Star Dinner Train starting service this weekend, the Columbia Terminal Railroad (COLT) would like to remind drivers to be cautious at railroad crossings. The new business will be running trains from theCOLT Transload facility on North Brown Station Road to Centralia, Missouri. Generally COLT operations occur during the daytime hours, Monday through Friday, so motorists might not be looking for rail traffic at all times. Motorists are encouraged to be prepared to stop for a train at all railroad crossings regardless of the time of day or day of the week.
The COLT railroad's route generally runs along Route B and Highway 124 from Columbia to Centralia. Motorists are urged to use the following precautions when crossing a railroad track to prevent accidents:
*Expect a train at any time of the day or night
*Observe and obey warning signs
*Look for oncoming trains before crossing
*Never walk or stop your car on a track
*Don't try to beat a train - they can't stop suddenly to avoid you
The COLT is a short line railroad operated by Columbia Water & Light and provides railroad freight service to Columbia and mid-Missouri through an interconnection with the main rail line in Centralia, Mo.The railroad was bought by the City of Columbia in 1987 from Norfolk Southern when they decided to no longer serve the Columbia area. Today the railroad handles over 2,000 cars a year.
The Columbia Star Dinner Train is a private enterprise that will be offering meals while guests are transported in vintage passenger cars. For more information about the dinner train, please contact them at 573-474-2223, 877-236-8511 or www.dinnertrain.com.
