Construction Trailer Fire Damages Home Under Construction

COLUMBIA, MO (July 27, 2011) - For Immediate Release:

Construction Trailer Fire Damages Home Under Construction

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 6:15 pm on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, to 1805 Madison Park Drive for a reported small outside fire.

When Fire Fighters arrived on the scene they reported that a construction trailer that was parked in the driveway was fully involved in fire and the garage door and some siding was melting. Crews extinguished the fire in the trailer and cooled off the home which suffered some heat damage. Fire crews reported the fire was knocked down in approximately 5 minutes and there were no injuries associated with the incident.

The home is owned by John Jones of Pate Jones Construction, a local home builder, who had responded to the scene. Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn McCollom responded to the scene to investigate the fire. As a result of the investigation AFM McCollom determined the cause of the fire was likely the spontaneous combustion of some oily rags. The oily rags were used in the staining and finishing of the woodwork, and had been disposed of in the trailer earlier today. He also issued a preliminary damage estimate of $3,500.00 to repair the exterior of the home.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind our customers that proper disposal of oily rags from projects around the home is essential. Rags need to be hung outdoors to dry or placed in an air tight container. We also want to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
