Summer Weather Safety Week, June 19 - 25, 2011

COLUMBIA, MO (June 18, 2011) - Summer officially begins on Tuesday, June 21, 2011.  The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) wants citizens to be aware of the various health and safety hazards summer weather can bring.

"We want everyone to enjoy their outdoor plans and activities this summer but we also encourage persons to be aware of the dangers we face during the summer," says OEM Director Zim Schwartze.  "During the summer we could experience extreme heat, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and lightning on any given day.  In addition there are more people driving on the roads for vacations during these months, so being prepared is critically important.  The easiest and best way to be ready is to be informed of weather forecasts.  Knowing what the weather brings ahead of time can help make your plans go much more smoothly and could mean the difference between life and death."

The National Weather Service, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and the State Emergency Management Agency have joined together to promote Missouri Summer Safety Week" the week of June 19th - June 25th, 2011.

The Office of Emergency Management has information and downloadable materials, concerning how to prepare for weather-related dangers.  Those materials can be found at our website, www.gocolumbiamo.com/EM.
