Summer Brings Potential for Sudden Severe Weather

COLUMBIA, MO (June 21, 2011) - With summer's warmer temperatures and increased humidity comes a daily threat of severe thunderstorms.  The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) reminds citizens that isolated thunderstorms can form quickly and be just as dangerous as complex thunderstorm systems that move through the area. 

"The heat and humidity can combine to create thunderstorms that will pack quite a punch," according to OEM Director Zim Schwartze.  "The danger is that these storms can seemingly come out of nowhere and provide the same heavy rain, high wind, hail, and lightning in larger storms that we see coming for miles. They can also create flooding problems and, in some instances, tornadoes.  Making sure you're ready for these so-called "pop-up storms" is critical because of how fast they form." 

Schwartze encourages individuals, families, schools and businesses to be aware of ever-changing weather patterns, stay turned to local media when thunderstorms threaten, and have a NOAA weather radio in your home or business.
