Alpine Drive 4-Plex Heavily Damaged in Fire
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 12:57 P.M. on Sunday, March 13, 2011 to 3102 Alpine Drive for a report of a structure fire.
While en route, crews observed smoke visible from the intersection of Paris Road and Vandiver Drive. On arrival, crews found a large amount of smoke and flames coming from the ground floor of a 4-plex apartment building. Upon entering the home, crews found a large fire on the first floor, which was brought under control within 20 minutes. The home suffered significant fire damage to the first floor, with smoke, heat, and water damage throughout the remainder of the home. There were no injuries and a damage estimate is not currently available.
The occupant of the home, Bridgette Evans, indicated to fire crews that she was home with three of her children (8, 10, and 14 years) at the time of the fire. She stated that she was upstairs when the smoke alarms sounded; when she reached the stairs, she encountered a large amount of thick smoke on the first floor. She immediately evacuated the home with her children, and called 9-1-1 for fire department assistance.
Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department are currently working at the scene and at this time the cause remains under investigation.
The Evans family is receiving emergency assistance from the Columbia-Boone County Chapter of the American Red Cross as a result of this fire.
The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents to ensure their home is equipped with properly functioning smoke alarms, and with the change to Daylight Savings Time today, be sure to change your smoke alarm batteries. As this incident clearly demonstrates, SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES!
