Smoke in Structure Leads to Evacuation of Downtown Business
(Columbia, MO) The Columbia Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at Ameriserve Inc, 200 E Walnut, at 11:03 on Wednesday, March 16, 2011.
Arriving units reported light to moderate smoke inside of the building and building evacuation completed. Crews began trying to locate the source of the smoke by checking the HVAC units on the roof and in the basement of the structure. It was determined that a fan motor on the furnace in the basement had failed. A large electric fan was used to remove the smoke from the structure.
When the smoke was cleared crews allowed the 15 or so individuals who had evacuated the building to return to work. Crews were on the scene approximately 40 minutes. The only damages noted will be the cost of repairing the furnace motor.
