Heavy Rain Could Bring Potential for Flooding
COLUMBIA, MO (May 20, 2011) - The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting the possibility of several periods of heavy rain in Columbia and Boone County over the next few days. While there are currently no watches or warnings for the area, the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) advises residents to be aware of the potentially hazardous weather.
"Heavy rain in the area could bring with it a number of flooding issues in the county," says OEM Director Zim Schwartze. "With the amount of rain we've had in the area over the past week or so, additional rainfall on an already wet ground could pose a flooding danger this weekend. We would strongly encourage people living near flood prone areas to be aware of rain and rising water. We also encourage motorists to be cautious due to the dangers posed from low-water crossings, heavy rain and hydroplaning. Drivers this afternoon and tonight should be aware of the rain potential, slow down during heavy rain and avoid flooded low water crossings."
On average, more people are killed by flooding than by tornadoes, lightning, and hurricanes. Most of these deaths occur at night, when it is more difficult to recognize the dangers, and when people are trapped in vehicles. Motorists are reminded to steer clear of low-water crossings which are covered in water.
Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest weather information via NOAA weather radio or by tuning into local media. Information from the St. Louis office of the National Weather Service can be found at www.crh.noaa.gov/lsx/.
