Small Kitchen Fire Displaces Residents
COLUMBIA, MO (November 4, 2011) - For Immediate Release:
Small Kitchen Fire Displaces Residents
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 5:18 pm on Friday, November 4, 2011, to 1804 Garden Drive, Apartment A, for a reported residential structure fire.
Upon their arrival crews reported smoke inside the structure. Further investigation revealed a fire in the kitchen that involved the stove and the kitchen cabinets but did not extend into the attic. Crews reported the smoke detectors were sounding upon their arrival but the resident, Catina Stevens, reported that she discovered the fire prior to the smoke detectors sounding. The fire was extinguished in under ten minutes and there were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.
Assistant Fire Marshal (AFM) Lisa Todd investigated the fire and stated the cause of the fire was unattended cooking with a preliminary damage estimate of $ 10,000.00. During her investigation AFM Todd also learned that a neighbor, Lance Fuller, enter the structure three times before fire crews arrived on the scene, in an attempt to extinguish the fire.
With the change from Daylight Savings Time (DST) to Central Standard Time (CST) occurring this weekend, remember to set your clock back one (1) hour. And while you're changing your clocks - make sure you take time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms too! The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
