Small Fire at Public Safety Joint Communication Building

COLUMBIA, MO (November 6, 2011) - At approximately 9:15pm on Sunday, November 6th, the building that houses Public Safety Joint Communications, including the 9-1-1 Operations Center, was evacuated due to smoke and a possible small fire.  Six PSJC staff members were in the Operations Center at the time of the incident, and no one was injured.  Some Emergency Telecommunicators were relocated, to maintain limited phone capabilities.  Within an hour of the incident, the Operations Center was restored and fully functioning again. Columbia firefighters responded to the incident, which appears to be electrical in nature at this time.

"We are very thankful that this incident did not result in any injuries," says PSJC Director Zim Schwartze. "The fire was limited to one call-taking area, but did temporarily affect other consoles as well. Our Center is once again fully operational and residents can continue to call 9-1-1 for life-threatening emergencies.  We want to thank Columbia Police and Fire Departments for their response and cooperation during the incident."
