GIS Day: The Adventure in Our Community Open House

COLUMBIA, MO (November 10, 2011) - Maps will be at the center of attention Wednesday, Nov. 16, as area government, research and educational organizations using geographic information systems (GIS) gather for GIS Day. GIS technologies bring together maps, data, computers and people to better understand and analyze the world around us.

The Columbia Area GIS Day open house is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. at City Hall, 701 East Broadway, conference rooms 1A and 1B.

Since 1999, more than 10,000 organizations have participated in GIS Day. Wednesday's event includes a map gallery, short demonstrations and presentations, and a rotating slide show that highlight GIS activities of the City of Columbia; Boone County; Boone Electric Cooperative; the Columbia Area Career Center; Geospatial Extension; the Missouri Geographic Alliance; and the Geographic Resources Center and the Center for Applied Research and Environmental Systems (CARES), both at the University of Missouri.

The city will display Columbia City View, a new interactive map that gathers information about the Columbia metro area through a website.

"The Web map is a source of maps and information about government and representation, utility service areas, public safety services, zoning, annexations and natural resources," said Matt Gerike, City of Columbia GIS manager. "It's a useful tool that everyone can use."
