Geography Awareness Week is Nov. 13-19

COLUMBIA, MO (November 15, 2011) - The names and locations of states, rivers and capitals help us find our way and place in the world, but are just the surface of geography. Just as important to understanding our world are the watersheds and neighborhoods where we live, the networks of roads we use to travel through town, and how we use the land and resources around us. The city recognizes the importance of geography and geo-literacy with the observance of Geography Awareness Week, Nov. 13-19, and GIS Day, Nov. 16.

This year's Geography Awareness Week theme of "Geography: The Adventure in Your Community" highlights the geography present every day in Columbia. "A geographic approach to examining a community might be as simple as examining the micro-world of the ants in your backyard or something more complex as the shifting demographics or socio-political issues in a neighborhood or town," says Shannon White, Missouri Geographic Alliance coordinator. "We are all global citizens and geography can be our passport to understanding all levels of the 'community' within which we live."

Geo-literacy - the ability to apply geographic knowledge and skills to make decisions - and the visualization of geography through maps play important roles in the city.

"The city uses maps, knowledge of where things are and spatial reasoning every day to provide services to citizens and the community," says Matt Gerike, City of Columbia GIS manager.

In observance of Geography Awareness Week and GIS Day, the city is hosting the Columbia Area GIS Day Open House on Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. at City Hall, 701 East Broadway, conference rooms 1A and 1B.
