Un-attended Cooking Fire Causes Sprinkler Activation in Oak Towers
COLUMBIA, MO (November 27, 2011) - For Immediate Release:
Un-attended Cooking Fire Causes Sprinkler Activation in Oak Towers
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 10:18 pm on Saturday, November 26, 2011, to Apartment 709 at 700 N Garth, Oak Towers, for a reported commercial structure fire.
Upon their arrival crews reported the sprinkler system had activated and extinguished the fire in Apartment 709. They also reported a significant amount of water on the seventh floor that eventually found its way to the first floor. Crews immediately began salvage operations and worked for almost 2 hours cleaning up the water so residents could get back in their apartments.
Assistant Fire Marshal Brian Davison investigated the fire and stated the cause of the fire was un attended cooking. The fire was extinguished prior to the Fire Departments arrival by the activation of a single sprinkler head. There were no injuries associated with this fire and AFM Davison issued a preliminary damage estimate of $ 5,000.00.
The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
