Unattended Cooking Fire Causes $15,000 in Damages
COLUMBIA, MO (November 29, 2011) - Columbia Fire Fighters responded to a report of a structure fire at 3310 Jamesdale at 4:47 PM on Tuesday, November 29, 2011. The caller stated that flames were seen coming from a 4-plex.
Fire fighters arrived and noted light smoke showing from the east side of the building and building occupants outside. Fire fighters found fire on the stove and the cabinets above the stove in apartment # 1 and were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
Fire fighters checked to ensure that the fire had not spread to other areas of the apartment or to other apartments or the attic. Upon finding the fire was confined to apartment 1, residents of the other apartments were allowed to return.
Fire investigators determined that the occupant, Nakiea Coats left a pan on the stove and was alerted by the smoke alarm and the smell of smoke of the fire on the stove. No one was injured during the fire. Damage is estimated at $15,000. The owner of the building is Phillip Nickerson of Columbia.
Unattended cooking fires are the leading cause of fires in Columbia. The Columbia Fire Department reminds you to never leave cooking on the stove while you are out of the room. If you must leave, turn the burners off and if possible, remove the pan(s) from the stove top to a safe, non-combustible place. Make sure you don't keep combustible materials, such as plastic containers, towels, etc to close to the stove.
And of course, make sure your smoke alarms work by testing them once a month and replacing the batteries at least once a year.
