Office of Emergency Management Statement on Anniversary of September 11th

COLUMBIA, MO (September 9, 2011) - With the tenth anniversary of one of the darkest days in American History, the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) asks residents to take a moment and remember those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001.

OEM Director Zim Schwartze.:  "It's hard to forget the images and events of that day ten years ago.  Thousands of people lost their lives, including over 300 first responders who perished trying to save the lives of others who were trapped in the World Trade Center buildings.  While we rightfully remember the victims on the planes, in the Twin Towers, and the Pentagon on this anniversary, we should also remember the heroism of the day.  The bravery of the first responders who risked their lives to save others from the targeted buildings as well as the courage of those who overpowered terrorists and brought a fourth plane down short of its intended target will never be forgotten.  We also remember and thank the soldiers who have served and died in defense of our country in the years since the attack.  Our thoughts, prayers, and grateful thanks go to those first responders, soldiers, and their families."

Flags at city government buildings are flying at half-staff in memory of those who died that day.
