Two Significant Fires Keep Columbia Fire Fighters Busy Overnight

COLUMBIA, MO (September 10, 2011) - Columbia Fire Fighters were dispatched to 1407 Windsor at 1:01 am on Saturday, September 10, 2011 for a report of a structure fire. Fire fighters arrived to find a boarded up duplex heavily involved in fire with fire coming from the front and through the roof of the building. It took fire fighters about an hour to control the fire using aerial devices and hand-lines. Homes on either side 1407 were not affected.

The building owner was out of town at the time of the fire and told fire investigators via phone that no one was living in the structure and that he had recently applied for a demolition permit to tear down the house.

The structure was heavily damaged and unsafe in it's current condition. The Columbia Fire Department is working with Columbia Public Works Building and Site Development to raise the structure this morning.

The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation and no estimate of the structures value is available.

At 3:27 am, just as crews were clearing the incident on Windsor, Columbia Fire Fighters were dispatched to an automatic fire alarm at the University of Missouri Ellis Library at 520 South 9th Street. Fire crews arrived and after entering the building reported moderate smoke on the 1st and 2nd floors. Additional fire units were dispatched to the scene and found a fire on the 2nd floor which was being controlled by automatic fire sprinklers. Fire fighters were able to use fire extinguishers to finish extinguishing the fire.

Fire investigators and MUPD are on the scene working on a origin and cause investigation. Damage estimates are not available currently.

There were no injuries reported at either fire scene.
