National Public Safety Telecommunicator's Week, April 8 - 14, 2012
COLUMBIA, MO (April 4, 2012) - April 8th through the 14th marks the annual observance of observance of "National Public Safety Telecommunicator's Week," an opportunity for agencies such as the Columbia/Boone County Public Safety Joint Communications (PSJC) to highlight the excellent and professional work exhibited by those who work in the 9-1-1 Operations Center.
"Anyone in our community who has had to call 9-1-1 has experienced the professionalism of our Emergency Telecommunicators firsthand," said PSJC Director Zim Schwartze. "We handle thousands of calls each year, but every call received by each telecommunicator is managed with the upmost respect and the safety of the caller is always kept in mind. Our residents are very fortunate to have such an excellent and committed staff in our Operations Center, 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
Columbia/Boone County 9-1-1 Emergency Telecommunicators receive training and certification through the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch and Missouri State Highway Patrol before handling 9-1-1 calls. They also take part in continual training throughout the year, in order to provide optimum emergency services.
The PSJC Emergency Telecommunicators received nearly 73,000 9-1-1 emergency calls and handled over 325,000 phone interactions in 2011. This is in addition to numerous other job duties, assisting citizens and other agencies. Joint Communications currently dispatches for the Ashland Police Department, Boone County Fire Protection District, Boone County Sheriff's Department, Boone Hospital Center Emergency Medical Services, Columbia Fire and Police Departments, Columbia Regional Airport Safety and Security, Hallsville Police Department, Southern Boone County Fire District, Sturgeon Police Department, and University Hospital Emergency Medical Services.
The mayor of Columbia and Boone County Commissioners signed an official proclamation, thanking the Emergency Telecommunicators of Columbia and Boone County for their compassion and professionalism.
