Apartment Fire Extinguished by Fire Sprinkler
COLUMBIA, MO (April 12, 2012) - At 10:56 a.m. today the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported fire alarm at 700 N. Garth Avenue, Apartment 709, the Oak Towers Apartments.
Columbia fire crews arrived on the scene to find that a small kitchen fire in apartment 709 had been extinguished by the building's automatic fire sprinkler system. Fire damage was minimal and limited to some kitchen items that were close to the stove top.
Columbia Fire Department Fire Investigator Lt. Shawn McCollom determined the fire was accidental, a result of a stove burner being left on. The occupant of apartment 709 was not home when the fire occurred.
"This is the second time this month that fire sprinklers have prevented what could have been a large loss fire, both in terms of lives and property" said Fire Captain John Metz. Last week, automatic fire sprinklers averted what could have been a multi-million dollar loss at Columbia's Civic Recycling Center located at 3300 Brown Station Road.
Today's fire caused no injuries and damage is estimated to be less than $2000.
