Smoke Testing of Sewer Lines to Begin on Monday, August 13

COLUMBIA, MO (August 8, 2012) - As part of the continuing process of evaluating sources of inflow and infiltration into the sanitary sewer collection system, Trekk Group will continue smoke studies beginning Monday, August 13, 2012.  Testing should take six to eight weeks, weather permitting. Testing will only be done within the perimeter area of West Boulevard, Stadium Blvd, Fairview Road and Interstate 70. No other parts ofColumbiashould be affected.

A map of the project area is attached. Residents may also use an interactive map tool at http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/Maps/sewersmoketesting/ to determine if there property is within the testing area. The area of testing is shown on the map and a property owner can enter their address in the search box in the upper right corner to determine if they are within the testing area. Trekk personnel will begin hanging door tags with information about the testing in affected neighborhoods on Wednesday, August 8.

The purpose of the tests is to locate defects in the sanitary sewer collection system. The "smoke" that will be used for this project is non-toxic, harmless, has no odor, and creates no fire hazard.  During the testing activities, TREKK personnel will be identifying defects that are revealed when smoke escapes through them. Locations for defects may include roof downspouts, uncapped cleanouts, driveway drains, stairwell drains, yard or area drains, window well drains, foundation-perimeter drains and defective service pipes.

The information gained from these activities may be used to improve the neighborhood's sewer services. Questions regarding this testing should be directed to the Public Works Department, Sanitary Sewer Engineering at (573) 874-7250. Information concerning this project is also available on the web at www.GoColumbiaMo.com/PublicWorks/Stormwater .
