City’s annual commemorative poster unveiled

COLUMBIA, MO (August 13, 2012) - If you are from Columbia, there is a good chance you have come across a bike or two on the Katy Trail. For this reason, it seems fitting that the oil painting titled "Bike on the Katy Trail" by Colette Brumbaugh was selected for this year's commemorative poster for the City of Columbia. Unveiled on Saturday, the work was selected from 147 images submitted by 22 Missouri artists through a jury process.

A native Missourian and Columbia resident, Colette Brumbaugh graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Art in painting and was awarded a full assistantship to the graduate program at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. Primarily a plein air painter and watercolorist, Brumbaugh works from the natural beauty of the landscape and travels frequently to paint and gain inspiration from nature for her work. She is a member and exhibitor with both the Columbia Palette Group and Columbia Art League.

An old homestead on the Missouri River near Easley was the setting that inspired the painting. Brumbaugh says, "I was struck at how timeless this view was: the rusty bike leaning against the last remnant of fencing with the abandoned railroad paralleling the river. It was a visual time capsule, but also a living connector with barges following the river and bikes still riding the Katy Trail. It was that sense of nostalgia and vibrancy that I strove to capture in this image."

The commemorative poster was unveiled Saturday at the home of Raonak Ekram and Eston Schwartz, who hosted this year's poster party. The event is held annually as a fundraiser to support city-sponsored arts programs and services administered by the Office of Cultural Affairs.

The 2012 Columbia commemorative poster, "Bike on the Katy Trail", can be purchased at Deck the Walls in the Columbia Mall and at 1305 Grindstone Parkway, or at the city's Office of Cultural Affairs, 300 S. Providence Road.

The city's commemorative poster is a program of the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Columbia Daily Tribune, Columbia Home Magazine and Deck the Walls, and with financial assistance from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
