Afternoon Fire Damages Home
COLUMBIA, MO (December 11, 2012) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 3501 Clark Lane, Creekwood Trailer Court, lot 73 at 2:26pm. Several 911 callers stated the trailer was on fire.
Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 2:30pm and found heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the structure. Fire crews deployed a pre-connected hoseline, entered through the front door and encountered heavy fire in the back bedroom in the northeast corner of the home. They performed an aggressive fire attack and brought the situation under control in twelve minutes. The fire was contained primarily to the back bedroom and an adjacent bathroom. Fire crews spent an additional hour overhauling the damage, removing burned drywall and charred insulation. One adult female was home at the time of the fire and made it out safely. She did suffer minor smoke irritation to her eyes, was evaluated by medical crews and refused transportation to the hospital.
Columbia Fire Investigator Lieutenant Lisa Todd estimates damages at $30,000. The cause of the fire is improperly discarded smoking materials. There were no working smoke alarms in the home.
Three fire engines, a ladder and a rescue squad responded to the fire.
The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
