Grass Fire Reduces Visibility on Highway 63

COLUMBIA, MO (December 12, 2012) - The Columbia Fire Department and units from the Boone County Fire Protection District were dispatched to a natural cover fire at the intersection of Highway 63 and Highway AC at 1:59pm on Wednesday, December 12.  911 callers reported a large grass fire in this area.

Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 2:06pm and found heavy smoke drifting across the north and southbound lanes of Highway 63 between Highway AC and the the Discovery Parkway exit.  Fire was observed in the grass on the west side of the interstate.   Fire crews deployed pre-connected hoselines and rakes and were able to extinguish the fire in approximately twenty minutes. 

One fire engine, one ladder truck and a specialty foam truck from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call.  Three units from the Boone County Fire Protection District also responded.   

The cause of the fire is undetermined but likely started as a result of sparks from a vehicle traveling southbound on Highway 63.
