Fire in Commercial Oven Causes Minimal Damage

COLUMBIA, MO (December 17, 2012) - At 3:21 p.m. today, units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at 3015 Lemone Industrial Drive, the Gates Corporation.  While en route, the call was upgraded to a commercial structure fire as employees on-site confirmed an actual fire in a commercial heating oven.

Prior to the Fire Department's arrival, employees attempted to extinguish the fire with portable fire extinguishers but had limited success. The employees then evacuated the building. The first fire crews arrived at 3:28 p.m. and found an active fire in the commercial oven. Using a single fire hose, firefighters quickly extinguished the remaining fire. The fire was out in about five minutes and crews spent another 30 minutes ventilating smoke from the building.

"The employees did exactly as they have been trained. They notified 9-1-1, while attempting to extinguish the oven fire, and evacuated the building all at the same time" said Fire Captain John Metz.

The exact cause of the fire is not known and it does not appear that there was any permanent damage to the large commercial oven.  There were 60 to 70 employees working in the 180,000 square foot complex at the time of the fire. There were no injuries. Business operations in the unaffected portion of the complex continued once the all-clear was given.

Three Columbia fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the fire.
