***Update***Evening Fire Damages Home

COLUMBIA, MO (December 31, 2012) -

***Update***

Fire Investigator Lieutenant Lisa Todd estimates damage at 4612 Copperstone Court to be $105,000.

**Update**

An off-duty Columbia Fire Department Lieutenant who was in the area yesterday afternoon, noticed an unusual amount and color of smoke coming from the chimney of 4612 Copper Stone Court.  He drove to the home and alerted the homeowner who was in the driveway at the time.  This prompted the call to 911 and a timely response to what could of been a significant fire event.

Burning embers made their way into cellulose insulation in the attic space.  Fire crews were concerned about potential flare ups and remained on the scene overnight to perform periodic inspections.

Fire Investigator Lieutenant Lisa Todd confirms the fire originated in the flu and spread to adjacent areas in the structure.  A damage estimate has not yet been determined.

The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 4612 Copper Stone Court at 3:50pm on Sunday, December 30, 2012.   The 911 caller stated there was a fire in his flu.

Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 3:54pm and observed heavy, dark smoke coming from the chimney.  Fire crews inspected the fireplace and confirmed there was a fire in the flu.  Moments later, the fire broke through a wall around the chimney in the living room.  Fire crews deployed a pre-connected hose line and performed an aggressive interior fire attack.  The fire spread rapidly through the attic and broke through the roof moments later.  Incident command requested an additional fire company and continued aggressively attacking the fire from inside the structure and outside from the roof.  The fire was brought under control approximately thirty minutes later.  Flare ups continued in the attic space.  Fire crews opened a hole in the roof and performed aggresive overhaul in the attic area to ensure the fire was extinguished. One adult and one child, home at the time of the fire, made it out safely.

Columbia Fire Investigator Lieutenant Lisa Todd does not have a damage estimate at the time of this press release.  There were several working smoke alarms in the home at the time of the event.

Three fire engines, a ladder,a rescue squad and one Boone County Fire Protection District unit responded to the fire.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
