Resolve to be Ready in the New Year

COLUMBIA, MO (January 2, 2012) - As we enter 2012, the Columbia and Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and Public Safety Joint Communications (PSJC) encourage everyone to make sure they have a disaster plan in the coming year. 

"As we have seen in the past year, a disaster on any scale can strike at any time and any place," says OEM and PSJC Director Zim Schwartze.  "That's why it is important to be prepared for natural or man-made disasters.  A disaster may not be predicted or prevented, but preparation and response can make all the difference.  From developing an escape plan in the event of a house fire, to knowing what to do during severe weather, to having an emergency supply kit for your home and vehicle, preparation is critical for any kind of disaster.  Remember that it's always best to be prepared for what could happen, rather than be unprepared for what does happen." 

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has kicked off its "Resolve to be Ready in 2012" campaign, a nationwide effort to increase awareness and encourage individuals, families, businesses, and communities to take action and prepare for emergencies in the new year. The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management has a number of informational brochures on disaster preparedness for individuals, families, schools, businesses or groups.  These materials can be found at the OEM office on Seventh Street in Columbia, or at the OEM website at www.gocolumbiamo.com/EM, or the OEM office located at 17 North Seventh Street, Suite A, in Columbia.
