Office of Emergency Management & National Weather Service Announce Date for Weather Spotter Training Session
COLUMBIA, MO (January 26, 2012) - In less than two months, spring will return to mid-Missouri. And spring will bring with it the possibility of severe weather and the need for weather spotters in the region. The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the National Weather Service (NWS) will host a Weather Spotter Training class on Tuesday, February 21st, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Columbia Police Department Training Facility.
"Trained weather spotters are extremely critical in the early warning process," says OEM Director Zim Schwartze. "Accurate information obtained from spotters helps us alert the public about approaching severe weather. In a situation where minutes count, that advance information can literally save lives."
The weather spotter training covers how to safely observe severe weather, what to identify, and how to report observations to the National Weather Service. The class will also cover basic severe weather safety.
The Columbia Police Department Training Facility is located at 5001 Meyer Industrial Drive. The class is limited to 75 people. To RSVP, or for more information, contact the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management at (573) 874-7400.
