Afternoon Fire Closes a Portion of West Worley for a Few Hours

COLUMBIA, MO (July 10, 2012) - For Immediate Release:

Afternoon Fire Closes a Portion of West Worley for a Few Hours

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 3:13 pm on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, to 711 W Worley, for a reported residential structure fire.

Prior to their arrival crews reported smoke visible from the downtown area. When crews arrived on the scene at 3:17 the reported smoke and flames visible from the rear of the structure with approximately 50% of the structure involved. Shortly after crews arrived on the scene the electrical wires that provide service to the house burned away and were arcing in the drive way producing a significant hazard for fire crews.

Crews gained access to the rear of the residence from the neighbors drive while other crews enter the front of the structure to deal with the interior fire. After the fire was knocked down, at approximately 3:25, crews located the family dog who did not survive the fire. There was no one else home at the time of the fire. During firefighting operations a crew from water and light arrived on the scene to secure the arcing wire. It was also reported that the smoke detectors were sounding when crews enter the structure.

Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach investigated the fire and determined the area of origin, where the fire started, was located on the wooden deck at the rear of the residence. At the time of this release the cause of the fire remains under investigation. AFM Bach also issued a damage estimate of $ 90,000.00. One Fire Fighter suffered a minor injury while fighting the fire.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
