COLUMBIA, MO (July 10, 2012) - For Immediate Release:

Natural Cover Fire Reduces South Bound Highway 63 to One Lane

 

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 3:43 pm on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, to a portion of South Bound Highway 63 approximately ¼ mile south of Stadium.

 

Crews arrived on the scene at 3:50 and found approximately 2 acres of tall grass and cedar trees involved in this natural cover fire. Columbia Fire Fighters were assisted by four members of the Boone County Fire District. It took approximately 30 minutes to knock down the fire with an on scene time of approximately one hour.

 

There were no structures or vehicles endangered by the fire and there were no injuries to firefighters. There was also no cause determined for the fire.

 

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that during these hot and dry months there will potentially be natural cover fires near the roadways. As roadside natural cover fires occur smoke frequently covers the roadway and residents should not drive through the smoke. If smoke is covering the roadway you won't be able to see a stopped vehicle or emergency crews working on the fire.
