COLUMBIA, MO (July 15, 2012) - For Immediate Release:

Afternoon Fire Damages Worley Street Head Start Building

 

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 5:51 pm on Sunday, July 15, 2012, to 1402 Worley Street W, Head Start - Early Childhood Development, to investigate the activation of the buildings automatic fire alarm system.

 

Upon their arrival, at 5:53 crews reported smoke showing from the structure and from the electrical disconnect to the air conditioning unit. The incident was immediately upgraded to a commercial structure fire while the initial company gained access to the building. Upon entering the structure crew's encountered smoke, further investigation led them to the basement and active fire in a mechanical room. After the fire was knocked down it was discovered that the fire had extended to the attic through a chase in the wall. Extensive overhaul was conducted to extinguish the hidden fire in the wall and the attic.

 

Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach investigated the fire and determined the area of origin for the fire was around the electrical disconnect to the air conditioner. He then determined the cause of the fire to be a malfunction of the electrical disconnect to the Air Conditioner. He also issued a damage estimate of $ 50,000.00. The structure was not occupied at the time of the fire and there were no injuries as a result of this fire.
