Early Morning Apartment Fire at the Links - Update
COLUMBIA, MO (July 24, 2012) - For Immediate Release:
Early Morning Apartment Fire at the Links - Update
Original Release
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 01:59 am on Tuesday, July 24, 2012, to 5028 Clark Lane Apt 100, the Links, for a reported commercial structure fire.
Upon their arrival, at 02:04 crews reported smoke a smoke filled apartment and after gaining access they extinguished a small fire in the apartment. The fire was small and required only a small amount of water to extinguish. There was no one home at the time of the fire but crews reported smoke detectors were sounding upon their arrival.
Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach investigated the fire and at the time of this release has determined the fire to be under investigation. He did release a preliminary damage estimate of $ 5,000.00. There were no injuries associated with this fire.
Update
After further investigation AFM Bach has determined the area of origin for the fire to be the top of the kitchen stove. He has also determined the cause of the fire to be combustibles, cardboard boxes, which came in contact with a stove burner that was accidently, turned on. He also updated the damage estimate for the fire to $ 10,000.00.
The Columbia Fire Department would like to remind residents that they should never place combustibles on top of the stove; even when they think it is off. Items like plastics, cardboard, and paper will ignite from a hot burner if it is left on, or has not cooled sufficiently after being turned off. These stove top fires, just like unattended cooking fires, will then have the potential to extend to the overhead cabinets and the other parts of the room.
The Columbia Fire Department also wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
