Replacing air filters can help air conditioners
COLUMBIA, MO (July 24, 2012) - As the heat wave continues, buildings are not cooling down as much at night, which makes air conditioners work even harder. Customers are urged to check and replace their air conditioner's filter to help the system work more effectively. Energy Services Superintendent for Columbia Water & Light, Jay Hasheider, suggests, "If you haven't changed your filter recently, now is the time to change it. We've had some reports of people calling a repairman only to find out that a clogged filter was why their system was not able to keep their house cool." When too much debris accumulates on a filter, the cooled air can not fully circulate throughout the building.
There are a number of other things customers can do to help their houses stay cool. Using heat producing appliances like dishwashers and clothes dryers in the early morning or evening hours can keep the house cooler. Closing shades on windows that receive direct sunlight can help. Sealing up the house to keep the heat out, like locking doors and windows, is as important in the summer as it is in the winter. Columbia Water & Light also offers a number of energy efficiency programs to help customers stay comfortable and lower utility usage.
