FIRE IN LANDSCAPING MULCH EXTENDS UP WALL AND INTO ATTIC 

COLUMBIA, MO (July 26, 2012) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

FIRE IN LANDSCAPING MULCH EXTENDS UP WALL AND INTO ATTIC 

 

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 11:05 pm on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, to 1513 Typhoon Ct, for a reported residential structure fire.

 

Upon their arrival at 11:11 pm crews reported there had been a fire in landscaping mulch and that there was active fire above the living room windows. As crews began working on the area above the windows they discovered the fire had entered the soffit under the roof and had extended into the attic. Extensive overhaul was conducted from inside the structure and through the roof as they searched for hidden fire.

 

Assistant Fire Marshal Lisa Todd investigated the fire and she determined the origin of the fire was in the landscaping mulch. At this time the cause of the fire remains under investigation. She did issue a preliminary damage estimate of $ 50,000.00. There were no injuries reported as a result of this fire.

 

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
