DOMESTIC ARGUMENT ENDS IN AN APARTMENT FIRE
COLUMBIA, MO (July 25, 2012) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
DOMESTIC ARGUMENT ENDS IN AN APARTMENT FIRE
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 7:31 pm on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, to 105 N Garth Apt 37, the Briarcrest Apartments, for a reported commercial structure fire. Prior to the arrival of fire crews it was reported that the Landlord was trying to extinguish the fire with a garden hose.
Upon their arrival, at 7:38 crews reported smoke and flames from the ground floor apartment. Crews entered the back of the apartment and found the bed and the contents of the room on fire. The fire was under control in less than five minutes. The apartment suffered heavy damage but the fire was contained to the apartment of origin.
Assistant Fire Marshal Lisa Todd investigated the fire and determined the area of origin for the fire was the bed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation while CFD and CPD continue to look for a person of interest that is potentially associated with the fire. AFM Todd has also issued a preliminary damage estimate of $ 15,000.00. A Smoke detector was present in the apartment but was not sounding as crews entered the structure because the battery was missing. There were no injuries associated with this fire.
The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
