Rollover Accident / HazMat Incident Closes One Lane of East Bound I-70

COLUMBIA, MO (July 25, 2012) - For Immediate Release:

Rollover Accident / HazMat Incident Closes One Lane of East Bound I-70

City of Columbia and Boone County Fire Fighters were called at 6:36 pm on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, to the 132 mile marker of East Bound I-70 for a reported rollover accident.

Upon their arrival, at 6:44 crews reported a cargo van on its side blocking the driving lane of East bound I-70. The driver was uninjured and out of the vehicle but a liquid was leaking from the cargo area. Crews soon learned the liquid was battery acid and it was leaking from 60 to 90 old automotive batteries that were being transported to St Louis to be recycled. Crews requested the Columbia Fire Department HazMat truck and then used and absorbent material carried on the truck to neutralize the leaking battery acid.

Because of the spill DNR was contacted and a response team was dispatched from Jefferson City. A clean-up contractor, Environmental Response, was also contacted and was en-route from the St Louis area. DNR required that all of the batteries be removed from the cargo area of the van prior to it being righted.

At 9:00 pm DNR arrived on the scene and approved moving the truck from the roadway to the ditch near the shoulder of the road so that I-70 could be opened again. After the truck was removed from the roadway the scene was turned over to DNR and all fire companies were released from the scene.
