Home Heavily Damaged by BBQ Grill Fire

COLUMBIA, MO (June 17, 2012) - At 9:51 p.m. Saturday night, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 412 Amazon Drive, near the intersection of Amazon Drive and Bamboo Drive in north Columbia. As the fire engine from Columbia Fire Station Nine, at Blue Ridge Road and Providence Road, was turning out of the station, the crew advised they could see flames in the distance.

Columbia Fire Fighters arrived on the scene to find a large amount of fire coming from the roof vents and rear of the single story home. Fire crews attacked the fire with multiple hose lines and had the fire under control in approximately thirty minutes. The home sustained significant fire damage to the attic, ceilings, and screened porch of the three bedroom home. Fire fighters remained on the scene for several hours searching for any hidden fires amid the attic insulation and damaged structural members.

Columbia Assistant Fire Marshal Lt. Tim Bach investigated the fire and determined the fire resulted from a barbecue grill that caught fire and ignited the siding and roof of the home.  The homeowner stated that they had just finished eating when they noticed the grill on the outside patio was on fire. The fire quickly spread to the vinyl siding and into the attic space.

Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $90,000. There were no injuries. Three fire engines, a ladder truck, and rescue squad responded to the fire.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents to always use caution when cooking with propane or charcoal grills. The National Fire Protection Association reports that there are, on average, approximately 8000 home fires involving barbecue grills every year, resulting in $75 million in property damage.
