Energy-efficient lighting to be installed in parking garages
COLUMBIA, MO (May 11, 2012) - The City of Columbia will begin upgrading lights in two city garages starting Monday, May 14. Meyer Electric will begin in the plaza parking garage at Seventh and Walnut on Monday. Crews will block off sections of parking spaces at a time to replace the figures. The garage will remain open at all times, however garage users should use caution driving around the work zones.
Once the Seventh and Walnut garage is complete, Meyer Electric will move to the Eighth and Cherry parking garage. The lighting upgrade is expected to take approximately two months to finish both garages.
Metal halide fixtures that are currently in the garages will be converted to LED fixtures to make both garages more energy efficient. The key strength of LED lighting systems is in their low power consumption and durability. On average, LED based lighting systems use 10-20 percent of the power consumption of their incandescent counterparts.
Funding for this lighting project comes from a grant submitted by the City of Columbia Office of Sustainability.
