City of Columbia to honor volunteers Friday

COLUMBIA, MO (May 14, 2012) - The City of Columbia will recognize the efforts of hundreds of volunteers who have contributed to municipal government at a lunch Friday, May 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sunrise Optimist Club Building, 2410 Parker Street.  Those who have volunteered with the City of Columbia since Jan. 1, 2011, have been invited.

Mayor Bob McDavid and City Manager Mike Matthes are scheduled to share greetings with volunteers and will recognize the city's Volunteers of the Month for 2011. 

The 2012 Howard Lang Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service to the City of Columbia will be presented to Robert C. Smith who was mayor in 1961 and 1962. He has been involved with a variety of community efforts for more than 60 years.

Volunteers serve the city in numerous ways, including beautifying streets, picking up litter, teaching the public about recycling, helping at festivals and special events, and keeping the community safe. Volunteers also assist the city in preparing for disaster, maintaining parks and assisting with children's activities.

During the city's 2011 fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, volunteers contributed 49,885 hours toward city programs and projects. Based on a national value for volunteer service, these hours are worth more than $1,086,000. This was the largest number of hours given to the city since it began collecting data on volunteer activities in 1996.
