Public input sought for City Hall fourth floor Percent for Art Design proposal
COLUMBIA, MO (May 30, 2012) - The Commission on Cultural Affairs and its Standing Committee on Public Art recommended that artist Norleen Nosri be commissioned to create site-specific art for the fourth floor of the addition to City Hall. The commission and the standing committee are now seeking input from the public on Nosri's designs for this project.
Nosri is a Malaysian-born artist. She studied at the Kelana Jaya Primary School and then went on to the Sri Aman Secondary School. She had additional studies at Taylor's College before heading to the United States to study at Columbia College and eventually the University of Missouri-Columbia. There she finished her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in ceramics and established herself as one of the few ceramics artists in Malaysia.
Nosri spent time becoming familiar with the city operations housed on the floor she will address, as well as the specific public spaces where art can be incorporated. She wants to create pieces that reflect warm themes of community, harmony and hospitality. Nosri envisions the installation to include teapots and cups, displayed in a glass case, with the intricate sculptural pieces accented with carving, inlay and other rich decorative elements and glazes that drip to form texture. Her current work features sets with heavy bases resembling wood to protect and hold delicate, porcelain cups.
The proposal may be viewed and comment left through an electronic comment box on the Cultural Affairs page of the city's website at www.gocolumbiamo.com/Arts.
Public input will be accepted through June 18. Suggestions may also be submitted by emailing oca at GoColumbiaMo.com, by mail to the Office of Cultural Affairs, P.O. Box 6015, Columbia, MO, or on the City of Columbia -- Office of Cultural Affairs Facebook page.
The project is being undertaken as part of the city's Percent for Art program. The Percent for Art program was established by city ordinance in May 1997. It allows for one percent of costs of eligible city new and renovation construction projects be set aside for site-specific artwork.
