Dishwasher Fire Causes Minor Damage in North Columbia Home

COLUMBIA, MO (October 4, 2012) - For Immediate Release:

Dishwasher Fire Causes Minor Damage in North Columbia Home

 

On 10/03/2012, members of the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched, at 6:22 pm, to a reported residential structure fire at 1315 Godas Drive. 

 

Upon their arrival at 6:27 crews found smoke and flames still coming from the dishwasher in the kitchen. The flames were extinguished and the unit was removed from the kitchen shortly after crews arrived. Crews then learned that the residents had loaded the dishwasher and started the wash cycle. A short time later they smelled smoke and upon investigating and opening the dishwasher they found flames. One of the residents ran to a neighbor's house, borrowed a fire extinguisher, and had knocked the fire down before the arrival of the fire department. After extinguishment the dishwasher was removed and crews checked the cabinetry for fire extension. 

 

Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach investigated the fire and determined the area of origin of the fire was located in the controls area of the dishwasher door. He also stated that the case of the fire was an electrical malfunction. AFM Bach issued a preliminary damage estimate of $ 1,500.00 for the damages caused by the fire. Crews reported that smoke detectors were sounding upon their arrival and there were no reported injuries as a result of this fire. 

 

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
