Ban on Open Burning Lifted

COLUMBIA, MO (September 17, 2012) - Columbia Fire Department Lifts Ban on Outdoor Burning

The ban on outdoor burning in Columbia that began June 26, 2012 by the Columbia Fire Department has been lifted.  The burn ban was in effect for 83 days.  Battalion Chief Brad Fraizer, Fire Marshal stated 'Conditions in Columbia including temperature and significant rainfall that coincided with the landfall of hurricane Issac have improved local conditions to what we consider normal for this time of the year'.  Another factor leading to this decision was the improvement of local conditions based on the Keetch-Byram Index.  This index is designed specifically for fire potential assessment.  It assigns a number that represents the net effect of evapotranspiration and precipitation in producing cumulative moisture deficiency in deep duff and upper soil layers.  It is a continuous index, relating to the flammability of organic material in the ground.   For more information on the Keetch-Byram Index visit:

The Columbia Fire Department reminds everyone that a permit to burn is required for the kindling or maintaining of an open fire or a fire on any public street, alley, road or other public or private ground.  Recreational fires such as those used for cooking are allowed without a burn permit.    For more information contact the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7392 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8am and 5pm.  You may also visit our website http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/Fire/
