The damage estimate for this fire is $40,000.  There were working smoke alarms in the home.

The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 3508 Berkshire Court on Friday, July 5 at 7:46pm.  Columbia Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene five minutes later and found smoke coming from a roof top dryer dryer vent.

Fire personnel conducted a rapid scene assessment and made an aggressive interior fire attack.  Upon entering the structure crews encountered heavy smoke conditions and found a laundry room door on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and contained to the laundry room area. 

This building is a duplex.  The adjacent structure was inspected and light smoke conditions were found.  Crews ventilated both homes using smoke ejector fans. 

There were occupants in both homes at the time of the fire.  All of them evacuated immediately.  No one was injured. 

Assistant Fire Marshal Lieutenant Tim Bach is investigating the fire and has not yet determined the cause. It remains under investigation.

Eight units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this event.  

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
