Improper Disposal of Smoking Materials Determined Cause of Deck Fire

COLUMBIA, MO (May 19, 2013) - For Immediate Release:

Improper Disposal of Smoking Materials Determined Cause of Deck Fire

 

On 05/19/2013, members of the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched, at 6:38 pm, to a reported extinguished fire at 902 Rogers St Apt 2E. When crews arrived on the scene at 6:41 pm they found a partially extinguished fire that involved the second story deck and siding on the rear of the structure.  The fire had been discovered by the resident of 2E and he had attempted to extinguish it with cups of water. Crews used a pressurized water extinguisher and a thermal imaging camera to find and extinguish hotspots not readily visible to the eye. 

 

Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach investigated the fire and determined the cause was improperly disposed of smoking materials. The area of origin for the fire was a flower pot full of dry peat moss that was located on the deck. It was determined that a cigarette was extinguished in the pot several hours before the fire. The preliminary damage estimate for the fire is $ 3,000.00 and there were no injuries associated with the fire. Crews were on the scene approximately one hour.
