Columbia Firefighters Graduate from Recruit Academy

COLUMBIA, MO (November 22, 2013) - Tonight, November 22, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, the Columbia Fire Department will celebrate the graduation of ten firefighters from the 2013-2 recruit academy.

The ceremony marks the end of eleven weeks of extensive training and certification as firefighters. Mayor Bob McDavid and Columbia City Manager Mike Matthes are scheduled to speak at the public event. Five of the candidates are Columbia firefighters, two will be Hannibal firefighters, two will be Marshall firefighters, and one will be a Mexico, Missouri firefighter.

The five Columbia firefighters will start work within the next week and will fill existing vacancies caused by retirements.

"This is a big day for these men. For many, it's the start of a career that could last twenty or thirty years. It all builds on these last eleven weeks" said Columbia Fire Battalion Chief James Weaver.
