Columbia Fire Battalion Chief Named Instructor of the Year

COLUMBIA, MO (October 24, 2013) - Columbia Fire Battalion Chief James Weaver received the 2012-2013 “Fire Service Instructor of the Year” award presented by the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute.  Director of the University’s Fire and Rescue Training Institute, David Hedrick, presented Chief Weaver with the award this morning during a surprise ceremony at the Columbia Fire Training Academy.

The University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute presents the award to instructors who exemplify the goal of excellence in instruction.  This award is determined through a statistical process that takes into account the number of classes taught, instructor performance ratings, and overall course evaluation ratings. 

Chief Weaver, a twenty year veteran with the Columbia Fire Department, has been an adjunct instructor for the Training Institute since 1994. Chief Weaver currently serves as the Battalion Chief over training for the Columbia Fire Department, a position he has held since 2009. “This validates what the Columbia Fire Department believes. Jim is a talented, knowledgeable, and dedicated instructor” said Columbia Fire Chief Charles Witt. “You would be hard pressed to find a more patient, meticulous educator” Fire Captain John Metz said. “That’s important when you are teaching someone to trust a half-inch diameter rope suspending them eighty feet in the air or to stay calm in the dynamic and dangerous fire environment” Metz added.  

Chief Weaver was first runner up for Instructor of the Year in 2004 and has been the recipient of the Highest Course Instructor Performance Rating multiple times during his tenure as an adjunct instructor.
