New Traffic Signal at Fairview and Ash St to become operational on April 2

COLUMBIA, MO (April 1, 2014) - On Wednesday, April 2, the new traffic signals at Fairview Road and Ash Street will become operational around 10:00 am. Traffic Engineers will monitor the timing and traffic patterns over the next few weeks and provide timing tweaks as needed. Pedestrian signals and new left turn lanes have also been added for both Ash St and Fairview Road.

The project was funded with Traffic Safety and Annual Streets funding. The project budget was $135,000 and the project was completed on time and on budget. The span wire signal used for the project was the decommissioned span wire signal which was used at Rockquarry and Nifong. When Grindstone Parkway was constructed, the traffic volume at Nifong and Rockquarry fell to levels which did not require signalization and the span wire signals had been used as a four-way flashing red all-way stop signal for several years.

The Fairview and Ash intersection was considered a good candidate for a traffic signal to reduce crash incidents, improve traffic flow on West Ash, and enhance pedestrain and cyclists safety. Two public schools, Paxton Keeley Elementary and Smithton Middle Schools are located nearby.
