National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week - April 13-19, 2014

COLUMBIA, MO (April 10, 2014) - Boone County Public Safety Joint Communications will recognize the outstanding service of its 9-1-1 Emergency Telecommunicators during “National Telecommunications Week,” which will take place April 13-19.

“Twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, our Emergency Telecommunicators stand at the ready, when an emergency strikes,” said PSJC Operations Manager Brian Maydwell. “In the face of thousands of calls a year, our folks help residents through every type of emergency situation. Columbia and Boone County are very fortunate to have such an excellent and committed staff in our Operations Center.”

Columbia/Boone County 9-1-1 Emergency Telecommunicators handled approximately 424,000 phone interactions in 2013, 77,108 of which were calls that came through 9-1-1 emergency lines.

Public Safety Joint Communications currently dispatches for thirteen public safety agencies in the Columbia/Boone County area. These include the Ashland Police Department, Boone County Fire Protection District, Boone County Sheriff’s Department, Boone Hospital Center’s Emergency Medical Services, Centralia Police and Fire Departments, Columbia Police and Fire Departments, Columbia Regional Airport Safety and Security, Hallsville Police Department, Southern Boone County Fire Protection District, Sturgeon Police Department, and University Hospital Ambulance Service.  PSJC also provides assistance to other public safety agencies in our area.

As part of Telecommunicators Week, officials with the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) will join Boone County Commissioners in presenting plaques and a proclamation recognizing PSJC as an Emergency Fire Dispatch Center of Excellence. That presentation will take place on Thursday, April 17, at 1:30 p.m.
