Dedication of the Childrens Grove at Stephens Lake Park
COLUMBIA, MO (May 3, 2014) - Columbia Mayor Bob McDavid will read a declaration during Earth Day festivities this Sunday (April 27) proclaiming April 27-May 3 “Acts of Kindness Week.” Throughout the week, churches and businesses will be encouraged to reach out to others in acts of kindness.
In culmination of this week, the community is invited to attend the dedication of the Children’s Grove from 1 to 3 p.m. on May 3, at Stephens Lake Park, east of the Riechmann Pavilion (2300 East Walnut).
The theme for the dedication is centered around “A Single Act of Kindness Can Change a Life Forever,” or at least make a difference in someone’s day. This free event will feature performers from the Missouri Symphony Conservatory Children’s Chorus, Junior Sinfonia and Young Artist’s Philharmonic Ensembles. A presentation at 1:30 will feature speakers Dr. Chris Belcher and Christine Corcoran. Children's activities at the event include a photo booth, arts and crafts for children that promote acts of kindness, and a storybook trail.
The Children's Grove is a newly planted grove of magnolia and crabapple trees symbolizing our community's commitment to provide for the safety and nurturing of our youth, through activities and services that develop their physical, social, and mental health. The project and dedication event were organized by the Children’s Grove Committee, co-chaired by Anne Deaton and Suzanne McDavid, and by the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department. Private donations were collected by the Children’s Grove Committee to fund the project.
